Learning How to Surf for the First Time in the Philippines!

Happy 2018!

2017 went by crazy fast for me  – it was a year packed with travels, making new friends from these travels, challenges, life changes, and the list goes on. A lot happened in 2017 – so I guess that’s why my year went by in the blink of an eye.

Anyway, I celebrated New Year’s Eve in San Juan, La Union –  the surfing capital in the north of the Philippines. I started the day by doing something for the first time: surfing! Many of you know that I am a terrible swimmer (can’t float to save my life), so surfing was never on my list of things to do. However, I wanted to end the year in a memorable way. Considering I traveled to a surfing town, I didn’t want to regret not attempting how to surf!

Fortunately, I decided to man up and just do it. I woke up at 6:00 am to take lessons, not really knowing what to expect.  My instructor explained all the mechanics of a surfboard, basic movements, and all the safety precautions when in the water. There was a lot to remember, a lot of “If this happens, then do this. If that happens, then do that…” There were plenty of “oh sh***t what did I just got myself into” moments while he was talking.

To my surprise, I was able to catch some waves and even stood up a few times at the end of my session. Standing on that board as the waves were coming in was definitely a challenge at first – but I got the hang of it towards the end! But yea, definitely a great end to 2017 by doing something for the first time!

Not to mention celebrating NYE with the best group I could possibly meet in San Juan. So lucky to have met them!!!

Happy New Year to everyone – I hope it’s been a great start!
