PEOPLE WHO TRAVEL: TORI FROM NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA
I am 27 years old from Nova Scotia, Canada. I’ve spent the past four years teaching English in South Korea, taking every opportunity possible to travel. I’ve loved living abroad and getting to immerse myself in another culture. I plan on completing my Education degree in the next two years and going abroad once more to teach.
1) NUMBER OF COUNTRIES VISITED
20
2) AGE AND FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRIP YOU TOOK
My very first international trip was to Cleveland, Ohio when I was 15 to participate in the International Children’s Games to represent Canada in basketball.
3)FAVORITE AIRLINE
4) YOUR GO-TO IN-FLIGHT APPAREL
I usually travel in leggings with a long, baggy shirt and scarf to double as a blanket. Also warm socks because I’m always cold on planes.
5) THINGS/GADGETS YOU CAN’T TRAVEL WITHOUT
Moisturizer. Especially on those dry planes.
6) FAVORITE COUNTRY AND WHY
Netherlands – Beautiful cities, wonderful people, and I got to see the places where my grandparents grew up. They used to tell me survival stories about them during WWII and it was really special to see these places in person.
7) WTF MOMENT
Being mistaken as a Russian prostitute on a regular basis while living in Korea.
8) FAVORITE CITY AND WHY
Hoi An – THE FOOD! Also there’s such a magical feeling there while walking down the ancient streets. Definitely don’t forget about the beautiful beaches either!
9) MOST EMBARASSING MOMENT
Getting a second-degree sunburn on my face while kiteboarding in Boracay. I had to walk around with big swells and blisters on my face for almost two weeks.
10) FAVORITE CUISINE
Thai green curry or Bahn Mi
11) HOTEL, HOSTEL, OR AIRBNB?
Hostel since I’m usually travelling alone and on a budget. Great way to meet people.
12) MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE
Living in Korea. It wasn’t really a travel experience but more of a lifestyle since I was there so long. I had so many amazing experiences while there that I would never have had the chance to do back home. Living and working there also gave me the opportunity to travel all around Asia. My favourite experience in Korea was being pulled up on stage with one of my favourite music groups from Korea, BIG BANG. I got to meet them and hug them. Later, I was also chosen to be a part of one of their solo music videos.
13) MOST CHALLENGING TRAVEL EXPERIENCE
Italy was my first time really travelling. Prior to it I was an aupair (slave) in Vienna and the family didn’t give me access to internet often so I wasn’t able to plan it very well. This was also before I had a smartphone so I was winging everything. On top of that, there were strikes from the transportation companies so it was extremely difficult to get around and so much time spent in lineups waiting to refund train and bus tickets and trying to organize other means of transportation.
14) BEST TRAVEL ACTIVITY
EATING. I always down to eat and to try any kind of food!
15) FAVORITE TRAVEL SOUVENIR
A beautiful hand painted ornament from the Bazaar in Istanbul
16) FUTURE TRAVEL PLANS
Mexico and Central America in January and hopefully teaching abroad again in Dubai or London.
17) BUCKET LIST
South Africa, Morocco, Australia, Western Canada and America, Peru. Too many to name, really.
18)YOUR TRAVEL INFLUENCER(S) AND WHY
There’s a FB group called “Girls Love Travel” and so many of these girls post about their amazing experiences and share ideas. Sorry men, ladies only.
