Everything here is delicious, fresh, and tasty! The pastries are well-buttered, and the breads are varied and excellent. The flour mixtures vary, with tight crumbs, crunchy crusts, and great flavor. The gingerbread is a delight, and the chocolate tart perfectly balances flavors. The only downside is that the praline bread is no longer available – the chocolate bread is a decent substitute, but it’s not quite the same.

During our week-long stay in Montemarte, we frequented one particular bakery. In the mornings, we’d get buttery and flaky croissants, perfect to accompany our freshly-brewed coffee. In the evenings, we’d get baguettes to enjoy with cheese and wine on our terrace. We occasionally indulged in a pain au chocolate. It was our go-to spot, and we loved it.

The baguette shop in Paris was incredibly popular, with a queue out the door. The interior was decorated with antique furniture and wooden beams, and the display of freshly-baked items was extremely tempting. The baguettes were especially delicious; I particularly enjoyed the chicken salad with a curried sauce that came in a seeded baguette. The croissants with chocolate filling were also incredibly soft and flaky, with a hint of butter. In addition to the baguettes and croissants, there were various types of tarts, jams in small glass jars, and patisseries.

The quality of the baked goods was outstanding, and the prices were very reasonable. We stumbled upon this bakery while walking up to Montmartre, and we are so glad we did!

We recently discovered a small bakery on a street with other shops like a fromagerie in the Latin Quarter of Paris. On a Sunday morning, it seemed to be mostly frequented by locals. We grabbed two of their award-winning croissants for breakfast, which was only 1 euro each. The only downside is that the bakery is for takeaway only, there’s no seating.

We also bought an apple tart, chocolate eclairs, and a baguette. The apple tart was fantastic and not too sweet, and we got a small one for 3 euro. We had to save the baguette for the next day, so we popped it in the oven for a few minutes, and it was perfect.

This bakery is an excellent find with friendly service and great prices. We only wish we had discovered it sooner, as it was right by our hotel and only steps from our metro stop. We highly recommend it to anyone visiting Paris.

Shinya Inagaaki is a Japanese baker who has found a home in Paris. He works at one of the city’s best-loved sourdough baking houses, such as Fermented General and Terroir d’Avenir. He has opened his own small store in Montmartre, on the Rue des Trois Fleurs, where he offers a variety of bread, including olive focaccias, brioches, multigrain bread, and scones.

Inagaki traveled to France to practice his profession in what he calls “the land of bread, cheese and wine”. He visited the Basque Country, Normandy, and Alsace to learn from local bakers before settling in Paris. He first worked at the Grenier à Pain in Boulogne-Billancourt before opening his own shop in Montmartre in June 2020.

Inagaki’s shop doubles as his local, where he works in the morning and opens at the end of the afternoon. His shop window is a symbol of the warm welcome he receives from his customers each morning. He posts different products on his Instagram account each morning, such as natural sourdough breads, fruit cakes, fruit pies, caramelized sourdough breads, and cakes. The bakery’s name comes from when one of the bakers, Julien, worked in a restaurant in Australia and the chef affectionately referred to him as “the French bastard.” The term bâtard (bastard) usually refers to a type of bread that doesn’t have a distinct form, like someone without the structure of a family. Additionally, it is used to refer to a child of someone aristocratic who has an affair with the domestique (housekeeper).

The first time I visited The French Bastards, I knew it was different from other bakeries. Emmanuel, one of the bakers, told me about their signature bâtard which is made with three different flours, two of them whole-grains, making it healthier and more aligned with modern tastes than if it had been made with white flour. Additionally, they make pastries that touch down in other cultures.

The bakery is visible from a side street where you can see all of the pastries being made in the big picture window. Everything is made in the shop around a cool granite table, which keeps the butter in the laminated doughs from melting. One of the most popular pastries is the individual lemon meringue tart, which is enough to feed two or four people. Another popular pastry is the pain aux raisins which uses tiny currants instead of the standard raisins because they taste better to the bakers.
